Time Billing Options

Migration Manager provides the following options for controlling how time billing works:

  • Start the Billing Timer Automatically when a New Time Entry is Created
  • Start the Billing Timer Automatically when a Matter is Made Active
  • Start the Billing Timer Automatically when a Matter is Opened from the Timesheet
  • Keep the Timesheet on Top of All Other Forms and Applications

1. Setting the Time Billing Options

The time billing options are set individually by each user. To set the options:

1.1. Open the Time Billing Form

The time billing form can be opened by

2. The "Start the Billing Timer Automatically when a New Time Entry is Created" Option

If this option is selected, the billing timer will be started automatically whenever you create a new time entry from the timesheet. If a timer is already running for another matter or time entry, that timer will be stopped when the new timer is started.

If this option is not selected, the billing timer won't be started automatically when you create a new time entry from the timesheet. You will need to start it yourself by clicking the Start button.

Note that this option only controls the behaviour of time entries created from the timesheet itself. If you create a time entry from the client detail form or if have selected the option Start the Billing Timer when a Matter is Made Active and you create a time entry by making a matter active, the time entry will be started automatically, regardless of whether you have selected to start the billing time automatically when a new entry is created. This is because the timesheet button on the client detail form and the option to Start the Billing Timer when a Matter is Made Active have both been designed as quick and easy ways to start recording time spent on a particular matter.

3. The "Start the Billing Timer Automatically when a Matter is Made Active" Option

If this option is selected, the billing timer will be started automatically when you make a matter active, either by opening the matter or by clicking the Active button on the matter. However the billing timer won't be started if you make a matter active by opening it from the timesheet (this is controlled by the next option). If a timer is already running for another matter or time entry, that timer will be stopped when the new timer is started.

If this option is not selected, changing the active matter won't affect the timesheet.

4. The "Start the Billing Timer Automatically when a Matter is Opened from the Timesheet" Option

If this option is selected, the billing timer will be started automatically when you open a matter by right clicking on a timesheet entry and selecting Open Matter. If a timer is already running for another matter or time entry, that timer will be stopped when the new timer is started.

If this option is not selected, opening a matter from the timesheet won't affect the timesheet.

5. The "Keep the Timesheet on Top of All Other Forms and Applications" Option

This option is useful if you would like the timesheet to always be visible, but we suggest you only use it if you have more than one monitor. If you only have one monitor, the timesheet would probably take up too much room on your screen if it was always visible.

If this option is selected, the timesheet will always stay on top of other forms and applications. Even if you click on another application behind the timesheet, it will stay behind the timesheet. If you have more than one monitor, you can have Migration Manager running on one monitor and drag the timesheet onto another monitor. This allows you to keep the timesheet visible without it getting in the way of your other work in Migration Manager.
