Active X error during Office Integration

Migration Manager integrates with Microsoft Office for Letter Merge, Outlook Connectivity and Export to Excel functionality.  Migration Manager connects to Office using Microsoft’s ActiveX component (think of this like a communication channel between Products of Microsoft Office).  If this ActiveX component fails or becomes corrupt, you will receive an error when trying to connect to Office from Migration Manager.

The following steps suggest what to try in order to resolve the issue (starting with the fastest/easiest).

1. Reboot the PC

In some cases, your Microsoft ActiveX component may have stalled or become locked. Completely shutting your machine down and re-starting may resolve the issue and is a good place to start.

2. Run a Quick Repair of Office

Running a Quick Repair of Office may restore the ActiveX component.

2.1. From the Windows Search box, type Apps & Features (1), then select the option for Apps & Features (2)

2.2. Scroll to Microsoft Office, then click it. Select Modify.

2.3. Select Quick Repair, then click Repair.

2.4. After Repair has run, re-boot the Machine.

Test in Migration Manager to see if Office connectivity is now working.

3. Run an Online Repair

Running an Online Repair of Office may also restore the ActiveX component.

3.1. From the Windows Search box, type Apps & Features (1), then select the option for Apps & Features (2)

3.2. Scroll to Microsoft Office, then click it. Select Modify.

3.3. Select Online Repair, then click Repair.

3.4. After Repair has run, re-boot the Machine.

Test in Migration Manager to see if Office connectivity is now working.

This process takes longer and usually requires you to re-active Office.

4. Re-install Office

If none of the above options have worked, then you will need to Uninstall Office, run the Office Removal Tool, then re-install Office.

4.1. From the Windows Search box, type Apps & Features (1), then select the option for Apps & Features (2)

4.2. Scroll to Microsoft Office, then click it. Select Uninstall.

4.3. Reboot the Machine

4.4. Run the “Office 2016 easy Fix Tool” to clean any remaining Office registries off your machine. Go to the following website:

4.5. Select Option 2 to "Completely uninstall Office 2016"

4.6. Once the Cleaner has run, Reboot

4.7. Re-install Office by following the steps in the below article.

Recently the 64-bit version of Office seems more stable with its ActiveX components.  We would suggest if you are having troubles with ActiveX, then when you re-install Office following the steps in the above link, in step 3, choose the option to install the 64-bit version.

The office.com pages should appear like this:

Then:

4.8. Once Office is re-installed, re-boot the PC.

4.9. Start your Office Applications (Word, Outlook, Excel) and make sure they open correctly.

Migration Manager integration with Office should now be working without ActiveX errors.
